Pele, also known as Pelehonuamea (“She who shapes the sacred land”), is celebrated for her dual nature: she forges new land with flowing lava while reclaiming the old in brilliant, fiery displays. Said to reside within the Halemaʻumaʻu crater atop the mighty Kīlauea volcano on the Big Island, her presence is felt in every rumble, glow, and plume rising from the earth.
